Happy Hallowe’en!!
Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,
I hope you are all looking forward to the Hallowe’en break. Things have been extra busy here since I last updated the School Bell. You will find out about some of our activities below as well as some information that you may need for when we return to school on Monday, November 6th.
Mission Week
We have had a very busy and hugely enjoyable Mission Week this week in our school. The work put in by everyone is so appreciated – whether it was baking a cake or some buns, dipping apples in chocolate or collecting up old books and other items to sell in order to raise some money for a worthy cause – thank you! We have a Talent Show in school today which promises to be a great finish to the week. We are delighted to say that at total amount of €1120 was raised and the money will be donated to the Opportunity Knox Charity. Well done everyone!
Mayors Visit
We were delighted to welcome the Metropolitan Mayor, Jody Power on Friday of last week. During his visit, the Mayor provided some wise words to the girls and presented certificates for attendance and the Amber Flag that everyone, especially the Wellbeing Warriors and Mrs. Shanahan worked so hard towards last year. Thank you to the Mayor for taking the time out to visit our school – we wish him well in his role for the rest of his term!
Climate Action Week
Sarah Keane a past pupil of Good Counsel working on behalf of SLI provided a Climate Action exhibit and workshops in the entrance hall of our school last week. The girls in juniors, 1st, 2nd and 3rd received the workshops which were very well received by all. Climate Action is a very current and hugely important topic and we were delighted to get an insight from Sarah throughout the week.
Swimming
A reminder to the parents of girls in 2nd and 3rd class that swimming will take place every Monday, starting November 6th for six weeks when we return to school after Hallowe’en. Tracey in the office is taking payment for swimming so if you have yet to do this please email or call the office.
Camogie
The girls in 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th will have camogie after Hallowe’en every Wednesday for 6 weeks in the hurling alley in Ferrybank GAA club. The sessions will be with Doxer Burns who did camogie with the girls last year. He will be assisted by two students from SETU. The teachers in the relevant classes will let the girls know what they need to bring on camogie days.
Communion and Confirmation Dates
We have dates for the Communion and Confirmation.
Communion; Saturday April 27th @ 11am in Sacred Heart Church Ferrybank.
Confirmation; Saturday May 18th @ 11am in Sacred Heart Church Ferrybank.
We will inform parents of any other relevant information regarding the sacraments in due course.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,
I hope you all have settled in well to the new school year. We were delighted to see so many of you last
night at the Parents Information Evening. It is important for us to strengthen the relationship between the
school and parents and the Information Evening is a great opportunity to do so. Please note that
homework will start from next week – your daughter’s teacher may have gone through this with you
during the Information Evening to make it easier for everyone during the year.

This website has a translation tool on the right hand side of all pages called ‘Translate Here’ – it maybe at the bottom of the page if you are on a mobile device/tablet. There are
many languages you can translate to so please use this tool especially if English is not your first language.
Cinderella
The girls from 1st to 6th class had a little surprise yesterday (Thursday) morning when they were treated
to ‘Cinderella – The Pantomime.’ The show was performed by M and M Theatrical Productions all the
way from Scotland who were superb! The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience and got to see a live
pantomime with all the sounds, lights and action in their own school hall. They even got to see some of
the teachers perform! Well done to everyone!
FAI
We welcomed Gary Power of the FAI to do a session with 3rd and 4th class last week. It’s the first time
Gary has visited our school and he was really impressed by the girls! He even left us some footballs to
practice our skills!
Assembly
Every Friday in the GP room we hold assembly. The girls get the opportunity to hear from me, to see
what other classes are doing and to celebrate birthdays and achievements. We also hold Class Reports
where two selected classes each week show/perform to the school something that they have prepared.
Last week we had great performances from Ms. Cunniffe’s 1st and Ms. Power’s 2nd class and we look forward to the Junior and Senior Infant class reports today!
Maths Week 2023
Maths Week 2023 is gearing up to spark some imaginations and captivate minds from 14th – 22nd October. Maths Week is an all-island event that takes place every October online, in-school and at venues across Ireland. It promotes awareness, appreciation and understanding of Maths through a huge variety of events and activities. At our school children will engage in a wide range of activities through online events, in-class activities and games. We will be using our Maths Eyes around our School Community during Maths Week. Covid-19
Please be aware that Covid-19 is present in the community and we are continuing to take precautions to
minimise any spread of the disease. It is important that you keep your daughter at home if she is ill. In

Swimming
The girls in 2nd and 3rd will be swimming after the Halowe’en break for 6 weeks. We will be in touch with details before the break.

Teachers make a big effort to keep their class blogs updated with all of the different activities and lessons
that their classes are doing. You can view the class blogs by clicking on the ‘Class Blog’ tab at the top of
the page and then clicking on the relevant class.
Internet Safety Training for Parents
The Parents Association have asked me to share a link regarding Internet Safety Training for Parents. I
have attached the link below which includes times and dates. The Information Session is online via Zoom
and takes place between Monday October 9th and Friday October 13th. The sessions are aimed at
providing useful information and skills to parents to enable them to engage with their children’s online
lives. I would strongly encourage any parents interested to attend.

Welcome Back
Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,
Welcome back to you all for the 2023/2024 school year!
For those of you who may be new to the school, we use our website and ‘The School Bell’ to keep the school community updated regularly on what is happening in our school and try to provide important information that maybe relevant to you.
We are very happy to welcome any new girls and families to Good Counsel. This summer, we have seen many additions to almost all our classes and of course we are delighted to have our new junior infants also.
School drop off and collection
We are delighted with how the school drop off and collection is going. Many thanks to all for your co-operation. Please note that when you are dropping your child off in the morning, if you are driving, avoid pulling up outside the school gate as this can stop others from accessing the drop off area. Where there is space, drive your car to the top of the drop off area and you can help your daughter out of the car from there. It is also kindly asked that you use the right lane coming in so that the staff can access the car park via the left lane. Thank you.

Parents Information Night
Every year in early October, we hold a Parents Information Night where all parents are invited to the school to see their daughter’s classroom and to meet their teacher. The teacher will go through how the classroom operates and what is expected of your daughter. It is also a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to meet other parents. This year the Parents Information Night will take place on Thursday October 5th starting at 6.45pm and will run for approximately 50 minutes. The Parents Association will hold their AGM on the night also where new members are always welcome. We will provide further information closer to the time. Please take the time to attend the evening as it has proven hugely important in strengthening the link between teachers and parents over the years.
PE Gear
We are in the process of sorting PE days and times for all classes. Your class teacher will inform you/your daughter as to their ‘PE day’ soon if they have not already done so.
Art, Craft & Photocopying Money
Thank you to all who have paid the amount due for Art, Craft & Photocopying for the coming year. If you have yet to do so, we kindly ask that you arrange payment please , this year we are only able to accept cash payments, please put it in an envelope with your child’s name on it and give it to her teacher.

Personal Pupil Accident Insurance
Notes were sent home last week regarding Pupil Personal Accident Insurance. This is optional for all children but is recommended by the school. Please see here for more information.

Intermediate Hurlers
Congratulations to the Ferrybank Hurling Team who, on Saturday last in Walsh Park recorded an historic victory vs Cappoquin in the Intermediate County Hurling final. We were delighted to hold a Green and White Day and to welcome many members of the team to the school on Tuesday of this week where the cups were displayed to the girls. The girls had some excellent questions prepared for the team which were answered accordingly.
A big thank you to the team for taking the time out to visit our school. Thank you to chairman Martin Freeman who was also there on the day. He informed the girls of the Community Family Fun Day that is occurring in the club this Sunday, September 17th and has asked me to share the leaflet for anyone who is interested – Community Family Fun Day – Ferrybank GAA club

Junior Infants
Reminder to Junior Infant parents that the girls will finish at 1.45pm starting on Monday coming, September 18th.
On the same day, the photographer will be here with us for photos with Junior Infants so please ensure that the girls have their uniforms on them. He will also take photos of any girls that have newly joined us or any girls who missed photos last year and would like to get them taken. You do not have to buy any photos – it is completely up to you. A note has been sent home to those concerned with more information.
National Heathly Eating and Growing School
Congratulations to the present Sixth Class, Miss Walsh and Miss Kelly on achieving accreditation of National Healthy Eating And Growing School in the last week of June 2023. Our Lady of Good Counsel achieved the Silver level as an Incredible Edibles School from Agri Aware. Well done to all involved.
Homework
There is no homework for the month of September in order to give time to the girls to settle for the new school year. Information on homework will be provided at the Parents Information Night which I have informed you about earlier in this newsletter.

Summer Time!!
Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,
I hope this update finds everyone well and that you are all ready for the summer break. We have had a very busy few weeks as the school year draws to a close. I hope you all received your daughter’s report card in the post and all of the other information that was included. If you didn’t, please give Tracey, our secretary a call and we will get it sorted.
The girls were given the opportunity to meet their new class teacher in their new classroom on Friday for a little while! They were all very excited and I’m sure they will all quickly settle into their new classes in the new school year!
Last Tuesday we welcomed the new junior infants and their parents. We are delighted to have met you all and I hope you are all looking forward to the new school year in late August.
We also bade farewell to the 6th class girls on Friday who had their graduation in school. Many thanks to all parents who attended – we hope you all enjoyed the ceremony which was very entertaining and emotional it must be said! Thank you to Ms. Burke and all of the teachers and staff for their efforts over the years in providing an education to the girls to help them better themselves and to prepare them for secondary school. All the best to the girls both in secondary school and in the future. You all have the world at your feet!
Staff
Congratulations to Ms. Claire Harney who is one of our SET teachers who recently had a baby boy. We hope you are all doing well!
Congratulations also to Ms. Jean Evans, SNA who will be moving schools to St. Senan’s, Kilmacow next year. Although we are very sad to lose you, we wish you the very best in your new school!
Sports Day
Everyone had a great day in school on Thursday last for Sports Day. Thank you to Ms. Shanahan for her efforts in planning the day out so well for all the classes! The girls enjoyed a day full of activities including an Inflatable obstacle course, an inflatable slide and ice pops to cool down on what was a beautiful day!

Finally, just a message to you all to wish you the best for the summer holidays. On what has been a busy year for the school in many ways, I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received since I arrived in late January. We are very lucky to have such a hard working staff who want only the best for every girl that comes through our door. Thank you to the Board of Management and Parents Association for their help and hard work in making our school a better place for everyone. Thanks to all of the parents and thank you to the girls themselves who continue to be a pleasure to work with.

Amber Flag
The Wellbeing Warriors made the announcement we have been awarded our Amber Flag renewal today. A huge thank you to the children, staff and committee for their hard work during the year. It goes to show that by working together, we can achieve wonderful things.
Camogie
A huge thank you to Doxer Burns for teaching First -Fourth Class camogie skills over the last few weeks in Ferrybank GAA itch. The girls had a great time and learnt some new skills.

June update!
Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,
As we get closer to the summer holidays, I am looking to update you on what’s happening in school and some other important information regarding reports, booklists for next year etc.
School Reports and Booklists
School reports will be posted out today, Friday to all families. In the envelope you will receive;
- Your daughter(s) report card
- Information on standardised tests (1st – 6th class)
- A school calendar for next year
- Information about booklists and photocopying and what the girls need for school for the coming school year
- Information regarding your daughters teacher next year.
As previously communicated, parents will not have to pay for school books/book rental for the coming school year. Instead, thanks to funding from the Department of Education, all books and copies will be provided to your daughter(s) free of charge on the first day of the new school year.
Please note that photocopying costs will still stand in all classes. These will be;
- €30 for girls in Junior and Senior infants
- €25 for girls in 1st to 6th class
It is kindly asked that you pay the appropriate amount in September.
School Tours
School tours are in full flow and the girls have really enjoyed the tours that have happened so far.
3rd and 4th class had a great day out at the Wexford Heritage Park and the Dunbrody Famine Ship Experience.
Junior and Senior infants had a super day yesterday in the Copper Coast Farm.
5th and 6th are surfing today, Friday in Tramore.
1st and 2nd class will be in Lismore Heritage Centre for their tour on Monday, June 26th.
A big thank you to the Parents Association for their help in subsidising the tours, thank you to the teachers for their work in sorting the trips and to Tracey, our secretary for all of her hard work in the office!!
Junior Infant Induction
We look forward to welcoming our incoming Junior Infants and their parent(s) on Tuesday coming, June 20th. We hope you will all feel very welcome in your new school!!
Sports Day
We will hold a Sports Day for the girls on Thursday next, June 22nd. We have some lovely ideas in mind for the day. Unfortunately, we are not in the position to invite parents in on the day.
Graduation
We will hold a graduation for the 6th class girls on Friday next, June 23rd. Parents of the 6th class girls have been sent information regarding the event. We look forward to seeing all of the 6th class parents to give the girls a lovely send off!

Summer Fun
Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,
Since I last reached out to you, there has been a lot going on in our school. Firstly, a big congratulations
to the 6th class girls who celebrated their Confirmation last night with the boys from St. Marys B.N.S.
Many thanks to Mrs. Burke for all of her hard work in preparing the girls and to Fr. O’ Shea for his help in
the preparations and for a lovely ceremony. The girls were exemplary on the night and we hope that
everyone enjoyed the occasion.
Athletics
On Tuesday May 16th, 24 of the girls represented the school at the Primary School Athletics in the RSC.
The girls had a great day and got to both meet and compete against other schools. We even had a
medal winner! Thank you to Mrs. Burke and Miss. Kelly for bringing the girls…Well done everyone!
Rhythm and Shakes
1st, 5th and 6th class are currently receiving Rhythm and Shakes lessons every Monday for 6 weeks with Cathy. I know the girls really enjoy it and I was lucky enough to be treated for an excellent performancefrom 6th class last Monday. Keep up the good work!
Visit from Sr. Maria
Last Thursday we had a visit from Sr. Maria from the Ossary Diocesan Office who came to talk to the
girls about how they are getting on in school and what they are learning. As ever, she was very
impressed with all of the girls who were all on their best behaviour. Sr. Maria is always very welcome in
our school and we look forward to welcoming her back in the future.
Photographs
Just a reminder to parents that school photographs will be taken tomorrow, Friday in the school and that
your daughter is to wear her uniform. The photos will include class photos, individual photos and photos
with siblings. Information regarding purchasing photos (if you so wish) will go out in the next couple of
weeks.
Dates for your Diary
School Closures;
Monday and Tuesday June 5th and 6th (Bank Holiday weekend)
Wednesday June 28th – School closes for the Summer break between 12:10pm and 12.20pm.
Yard time
With the weather getting better, the girls in Juniors – 2nd class have had the opportunity to get to play onthe grass area at the back of the school during break time. They are having great fun and are enjoying
the bigger space! Please remember to apply suncream to your child before school and to ensure that
they have plenty of drinks and a hat.
School Tours
With school tours quickly approaching, just a gentle reminder to parents that we are continuing to take
payments (cash) for the school tours. If you have a daughter in 3rd/4th class, payment is due tomorrow for their tours. Please feel free to contact the school in confidence if you wish to discuss payment of your
child’s tour.

Camogie
Our u11 and u13 teams were in action last Monday in Kill. We played against two very strong Kill sides. The girls played exceptionally well and they never gave up. We are so proud of the girls who represent our school so well.They are also excellent role models for the younger girls and they have helped generate interest among our younger girls. A huge thank you to parents who helped us to fund the buses. Your generosity makes commuting to these matches possible.
Amber Flag
We had a jam packed wellbeing week and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves. It was fantastic to try out activities like Zumba dancing (thank you Board of Management for funding), food tasting and cooperative games. A big thank you to the girls who led our cooperative games. They took their roles very seriously and it was a lovely morning. Another highlight of the week was Wear your Bright Colors Day. It always puts everyone in a good mood to see such bright colours around the school. We raised €304 as a result of your kindness. All money raised will go towards end of year activities.
On a separate note, the application for Amber Flag was completed and sent off last week. We are waiting to hear back from Pieta House if we were successful so fingers crossed 
Incredible Edibles
Fifth class have been working on the Agri Aware Incredibles Programme since the start of
this year. They have been learning about Irish food produce and following it from farm to
plate. They have learned about the role fresh produce plays in a healthy balanced diet. Over
the last few months they have also participated in Zoom calls with Agri Aware on topics of
food origin and healthy eating. They have been busy growing their own vegetables in the
school garden – planting potatoes, carrots, turnips, lettuce, chieves and strawberries. In the
coming weeks, we look forward to cooking and tasting the potatoes and hopefully the
strawberries will ripen soon. This week they submitted their logbook of learning to Agri
Aware in Dublin to showcase their amazing work. Well done to all our future growers and
gardeners.
Africa Day
Africa Day is celebrated on the 25 th of May. It is an annual worldwide celebration of the
people, cultures, food, music and dance from the African Continent. Our school and pupils
share many links with different countries on the continent of Africa. To mark this day in
school, we shared stories through beautiful picture books on different aspects of African
culture with all the classes. We have a very colourful flag display, created by fourth class,
showcasing all flags of the countries in Africa. There were two displays showing artifacts,
pottery, wooden animals, African patterns, famous African people and some beautiful books.
We would like to say a big thank you to our past pupil, who visited the classes in native dress
and spoke about different aspects of living in Africa. We had a wonderful day. we would like to wish all families and friends celebrating today and at the weekend a Happy Africa Day.
Miss Kelly
May Update
Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,
I hope this message finds you all well. As we get closer to the summer we look forward to the longer
days and better weather (hopefully!). In the month of May we celebrate Mary Our Mother. We enjoyed a
special assembly with Ms. Power’s 2nd class last Friday and Ms. Kelly has arranged a beautiful May
altar in the entrance hall in the school. Thank you to all the girls who have brought in flowers for the May
altar!
Wellbeing Week
This week we have had a very busy Wellbeing Week which has been organised by Ms. Shanahan and
the Wellbeing Warriors. Each day had a different focus ranging from Mindful Monday to Friendship
Friday. We started off on Monday with Zumba for all classes thanks to the Zumba dance teacher, Rachel
Dunne. Throughout the week the classes have enjoyed activities including an intercom message daily,
mindful walks, the daily mile, breathing techniques, mindfulness colouring, meditation, a guest speaker
for 5th and 6th for healthy eating, Healthy Eating Assembly and healthy food tasting with Ms. Burkes 6th
class, cooperate/teamwork games….the list goes on. Thanks to everyone for their hard work in arranging
and participating in a busy but very successful Wellbeing Week!
To conclude Wellbeing week, tomorrow, Friday, we will have a ‘Wear your Brightest Colour Clothes Day’
where the girls are invited to dress in bright colours coming to school. We will be fundraising for ‘Wear
your Brightest Colour Clothes Day’ and any contribution you would like to make is greatly appreciated. All
funds will be used towards activities for the girls.
First Holy Communion
Congratulations to the girls in 2nd class who made their Communion on Saturday. Thank you to Ms.
Power who had everything perfectly prepared and to Fr O’ Shea for his help and a beautiful mass. Well
done to the girls themselves who were so good, as ever on the day. Fortunately, the weather was nice to
us and we hope that everyone celebrating the Communion had a lovely day.
Primary Schools Athletics
We are holding running trials for the girls in 1stto 6th class as Primary Schools Athletics will take place in
the Regional Sports Centre (RSC) on Tuesday coming. Best of luck to the girls who have qualified to go.
If your daughter has qualified, she will receive a permission slip which is to be signed and returned to the
school.
Weather
The weather is gradually improving and just a reminder to you to please ensure that your child has plenty
of drinks to keep them hydrated in school and that we encourage you to apply suncream to your
daughter before school and for them to wear a hat also.
In Service Day
Reminder: The school will be closed for the girls next Friday (not tomorrow), May 19th for teacher In Service training. We will reopen on Monday, May 22nd.
Photographs
We have arranged to have photographs taken of the whole school on Friday, May 26th. This will include
individual photos, photos with siblings and class photos. Information will go out to parents after regarding the photos including proofs (examples of the photos taken) and how to purchase, if you wish to do so.
Traffic Disruption
BAM (the company carrying out the works near our school) have informed me that there will be some
disruption on the Abbey road next week. They have informed me that they will try to avoid disruption
during pick up and drop off times.
Given the nature of the works that are going to take place in Ferrybank in the foreseeable future, we will
do our best to let you know of disruptions/changes regarding traffic that effect our school. As the weather improves, it could be a good time to leave the cars at home and walk to and from school with your child(ren) especially if you live nearby.
Camogie
Our U11 camogie team were in action last week in Kill. They played three games against Newtown, St. Saviours and Kill. We won 2 games and played out a close draw. They will be back in action in a few weeks. They girls played really well and did a brilliant job representing our school.
