Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS

Ferrybank, Waterford

The girls have been very busy for the past 2 weeks. Last week they each planted sunflower seeds and have been enjoying taking care of them and watching them sprout and grow.
This week we worked with Ms Kelly to plant potatoes and we are looking forward to see how they grow after the Easter break.
Earlier this week we all went to the kitchen and we learned how to make rice crispie cakes. We changed up the recipe and used cornflakes instead. We decorated our cakes to make them look like nests, using little chicks and eggs. The girls did fantastic work and it seems like we have some young bakers in our class.
Happy Easter to all, and enjoy the break!
Miss Hall

What a busy Term 2 it has been.  The girls are well and truly ready to take a break from school and concentrate on enjoying the spring air and some rest and relaxation.  They have been very busy bees over the last few weeks and need to recharge over the Easter break and get set for the final Term 3 of 2nd Class.

The girls did a lot of work in the ‘measures’ area of the Maths curriculum.  There were a lot of out of seat activities where we used different non-standard materials to measure length.  We estimated and then measured the length of corridors, furniture and rooms.

We also learned about Capacity and amounts we could pour and fill in to various containers.  We estimated and measured how many small tubs (i.e. yogurt pots) it took to fill a 1litre bottle, 500ml bottle or 250ml bottle.  Over time we learned about standard measurements, millilitres and litres.  The girls did most of the teaching in this lesson!

The girls finished their final draft of their Persuasive genre entitled ‘Spring is the most important season’.  Well done girls on all the weeks of planning, researching and editing.  No doubt you will enjoy having these read to you over Easter.

In History, we learned about the life of St. Patrick and did our first Kahoot quiz on the tablets.  The girls enjoyed the buzz and the podium results!

We have been spending a lot of time in SPHE learning about healthy living.  The girls identified things that they did that were healthy and also things they can try to improve.  They designed a beautiful Food Pyramid using materials from home and also magazines.  Ask them what they have learned about the different layers and what size servings you should have!  To finish, we enjoyed some time in the staff kitchen where the girls identified and created their very own Fruit and Vegetable Kebabs.  A nice healthy treat for the lunchboxes!

We have been learning about the properties of materials in Science and what materials are made from.  As a challenge, the girls were given a number of materials – leather, wool, hessian, rubber, plastic, steel, cotton wool, felt, pvc.  The girls predicted and then investigated using magnifying glass, which materials were waterproof and why.

And finally, this week as part of National Tree week (19th – 26th March), 2nd class planted a Maple tree on the school grounds.  Firstly the girls had to go on a “Tree-sure Hunt” which was “easy-treesie!”  Our Principal, Mr. Nagle, kindly helped out with the process and informed the children how to best look after their tree. Together we had a very enjoyable time.  This will grow as your children grow and we will look after it for many years to come.

Wishing you a very happy and safe Easter.

Best wishes, Mrs. Power

Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and friends of the school,

I hope you are all looking forward to the Easter break. As we know, schools are busy places for everyone and the break at Easter gives everyone a chance to reflect and re-set before getting into our last term for this school year.

Raffle

Over the last couple of weeks, the Parents Association have been organising an Easter Raffle. The funds raised will go towards activities for the girls in Term 3. Many thanks to the Parents Association for all their efforts – in putting the prizes together and sorting the envelopes with the tickets. Thank you all who donated prizes and a big thank you to all of the children and parents for buying and selling tickets!! Over €1100 was raised….Well done everyone!!

Book Scheme

Last week, the government announced a new Book Scheme initiative for the coming 2023/2024 school year where parents no longer have to pay for school books or book rental. Great news for parents! Instead the school will supply the books on the first day of school. We will let you know more closer to the time!

Covid-19 and illness

Although we seem to be moving on from Covid-19, we continue to implement good practice in terms of sneezing, coughing, sanitising, handwashing and ventilation. These measures are helpful in avoiding illness of many types – not just Covid-19. We have noticed more recently that some other illnesses are circulating. Please continue to monitor your own child(ren) and if they are sick, please keep them at home until they are better.

Outdoor Learning Space and Garden – From Seed to Plate.

This week the pupils from Junior Infants to Third Class, between the rain showers, began planting early seed potatoes. A big thank you to Mark, our caretaker, for preparing the soil. By planting our seed potatoes now, it will ensure that we will be harvesting in June, before we break up for the summer holidays. Over the coming months, each class will take care of and watch how their potato crop progresses. Hopefully, and with our fingers crossed we will have a good yield. This will enable the pupils to see the potatoes come from the soil to the kitchen, where we will cook and taste them.  5th Class and Miss Walsh planted their seed potatoes three weeks ago, as part of the Incredible Edibles programme, and so far the green shoots are shooting up.

Happy Ramadan

Ramadan Mubarak to all families who are celebrating this Holy month. May your special month bring peace, happiness and infinite blessings.

Trócaire

On Wednesday we had a special visitor to our school from Trócaire Head Office, Maynooth, Co. Kildare. The pupils in 4th and 5th classes took part in this year’s workshops. Grainne, who has worked with Trócaire for over 20 years told the pupils all about the important  work Trocaire does in 16 countries around the world. The focus of the workshop this year is the girl, Nasteha and her family, who features on this year’s Trócaire box. The pupils enjoyed the workshops and asked many questions afterwards. Thank you all for your support and generosity during this Lent and especially to our Trócaire Ambassadors in 5th Class. I wish you all a happy and Holy Easter.

Miss Kelly.

Everyone is looking forward to the Easter Holidays and we hope that the weather will improve and everyone has a safe and enjoyable break.

School will close on Friday at:

Junior & Senior infants 12.10pm

1st & 2nd Classes 12.15p.m.

3rd – 6th Classes 12.20p.m.

School will re-open on Monday April 17th.

The girls had great fun this week, learning about and preparing for Easter. We learnt about things we see or things that happen at Easter and started reading the Easter story.

The classroom and corridors were soon filled with Easter bunnies wearing Easter bonnets, perfect to wear on an Easter egg hunt.

We started an experiment today to see what a plant needs to grow. We planted 4 pots, one to stay by the window in the classroom, watered everyday. One by the window, with no water, one in a dark press and 1 in the fridge. We’ll be watching carefully as scientists, to see what, if anything grows.
