Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS

Ferrybank, Waterford

Thank you to 5th class and the parents that worked so hard to create such a memorable Mission Week. 💖

Our talented 5th class took part in the Halloween talent show. Well done to all the participants, you were all fantastic!

Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and Friends of the school,

I hope you are all looking forward to the Hallowe’en break. Things have been extra busy here since I last updated the School Bell. You will find out about some of our activities below as well as some information that you may need for when we return to school on Monday, November 6th.

Mission Week

We have had a very busy and hugely enjoyable Mission Week this week in our school.  The work put in by everyone is so appreciated – whether it was baking a cake or some buns, dipping apples in chocolate or collecting up old books and other items to sell in order to raise some money for a worthy cause – thank you! We have a Talent Show in school today which promises to be a great finish to the week. We are delighted to say that at total amount of €1120 was raised and the money will be donated to the Opportunity Knox Charity. Well done everyone!

Mayors Visit

We were delighted to welcome the Metropolitan Mayor, Jody Power on Friday of last week. During his visit, the Mayor provided some wise words to the girls and presented certificates for attendance and the Amber Flag that everyone, especially the Wellbeing Warriors and Mrs. Shanahan worked so hard towards last year. Thank you to the Mayor for taking the time out to visit our school – we wish him well in his role for the rest of his term!

Climate Action Week

Sarah Keane a past pupil of Good Counsel working on behalf of SLI provided a Climate Action exhibit and workshops in the entrance hall of our school last week. The girls in juniors, 1st, 2nd and 3rd received the workshops which were very well received by all. Climate Action is a very current and hugely important topic and we were delighted to get an insight from Sarah throughout the week.

Swimming

A reminder to the parents of girls in 2nd and 3rd class that swimming will take place every Monday, starting November 6th for six weeks when we return to school after Hallowe’en. Tracey in the office is taking payment for swimming so if you have yet to do this please email or call the office.

Camogie

The girls in 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th will have camogie after Hallowe’en every Wednesday for 6 weeks in the hurling alley in Ferrybank GAA club. The sessions will be with Doxer Burns who did camogie with the girls last year. He will be assisted by two students from SETU. The teachers in the relevant classes will let the girls know what they need to bring on camogie days.

On Wednesday, the girls in 4th class held a mission week shop in the hall. The girls made posters to advertise their goods, made presentations to classes, set up the hall and ran it all so well. So many wonderful toys and books were available and the most scrumptious treats. Well done to all the girls and their families for presenting such lovely things.

What a fantastic few weeks we’ve had in 2nd class! Everyday the girls have been so well behaved and really engaging in their learning. September was settling in month and now we’re almost through October and the girls are used to their new routine and enjoying all the fun activities we are participating in.

There are so many things we could include but here are just a few snippets of the work your girls are undertaking in 2nd class, so far this year. In Maths the girls did a lot of hands-on activities. Here we can see the girls making and creating 2D shapes on geoboards and using cocktail sticks and marshmallows. In groups they described the properties of their shapes. However, the marshmallows disappeared at the end of the activity!!!!!

We also went on a ‘Right angles’ hunt around the school. The children made their own right angle by folding a circle into quarters. They used this to find angles that were greater than, less than or exactly a right angle.

In Art the girls were very creative in making their own jigsaws. We had fun sharing and making each others’. We are designing and making some Halloween costumes currently and we’ll share some images when we’re done!

In Science, we have been learning about Autumn and seasonal changes. The girls used some tree keys to find out the names of the trees in our school grounds. They picked out their favourite tree which they drew. They will repeat this activity in Winter, Spring and Summer to see how their tree changes through the seasons. We paid particular attention to the Maple tree which 2nd planted last year. We will focus on this over the year.

In History the girls were learning about Halloween and all the old traditions. Ask the girls about the items that were found in the Barmbrack long ago and what they meant. Or what was mumming? And did people carve in Ireland long ago? Thank you the the mams, dads and grandparents who contributed to our History class through voice recordings, video recordings, pictures and photographs on Seesaw. It really added to our class. We also had to find out who would get the ring in the barmbrack and had a little taste…

We had a guest speaker in our school telling the children all about Climate change. They had fun doing a information hunt and can bring a lot of what they learned home with them to help our planet for future generations.

In Maths recently, the girls have been learning about sequencing and time. Well done on the use of language and ordering stories and images in stories. To finish, the girls sequenced a recipe, and made some beautiful Rice Krispie buns for themselves and the staff. Thanks for the snack girls.

I think the girls deserve a break after a very busy but fun start to the year. We are looking forward to the Talent Show on Friday.

Take care,

Mrs. Power

The girls had great fun this week, reading maths story books and doing fun activities from them. They measured items around the class, made a time timetable for the upcoming Mission Week, made symmetrical monster and fraction pizzas, We rounded out the week with a maths trail around the school. Great fun was had by all.

The girls this week started learning about the history of Halloween and did a wonderful job re-enacting the legend of Loftus Hall. Yhe performances were amazing. Who knew scary stories could be so funny.
