Good Counsel Good Citizen Awards
What are the Good Counsel Good Citizen Awards?
In September 2015, Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS was one of only eight schools nationwide to take part in the Partnership Schools Project. This project is a collaboration between the Irish Primary Principals’ Network and the National Parents’ Council. We established an Action Team comprised of parents, pupils, staff and members of the local community. The Action Team’s aim was, and is, to make the school a better place for all of our pupils. (See more about the Action Team here.)
One of the goals of the Action Team was to find a way for the school
- to promote and to recognize positive behavior and
- to encourage good citizenship at school and elsewhere.
We began with a four week Citizenship training programme for the children. The girls identified the qualities of a good citizen.
A good citizen
- has Courage
- has Patience
- has Respect
- is Caring
- is Loyal
- is Trustworthy
- is Fair
The girls also identified their rights and their responsibilities as citizens of our school.
The Action Team designed a Nomination Form based on the qualities, rights and responsibilities and a certificate, and we ordered special badges for our award winners.
How the Award Programme Works
Every week, any staff member may use the Nomination Form to put a pupil forward for a Good Citizen Award. Every pupil nominated receives a certificate and each weekly winner receives a badge to wear.
Each month, we choose a Good Counsel Good Citizen of the Month. The monthly winner’s picture is displayed in the Front Hall and here on our website. At the end of the year, we choose the Good Counsel Good Citizen of the Year. She is awarded a perpetual shield and a plaque to keep.
The 2016 Good Counsel Good Citizen of the Year is Rosa.
