Week 3
Another busy week in 6th Class. The week flew by as we were busy each and every day.
In English, we completed our first Recount writing in our Manuscript Copies. We edited and redrafted our Diaries, from the planning stage to the end product, before finally writing them in our Manuscript copies.
We have been taking a different approach to PE/Irish these last few weeks, where we are doing PE through the Irish language. At first the girls seemed daunted by this, but they are still enjoying PE, as well as learning and using some Irish. We hope to build on our oral Irish in this way.
The girls have been blowing the cobwebs off their Recorders in Music and they are producing some nice sounds. Remember – practise just a few minutes every night and it will become easier. We hope to have a little performance in the future.
And we have been enjoying Drama over the last few weeks, where the girls are in role as pirates. Some very interesting characters in the class, indeed!
Week 2!
Already we are half way through September and we have lots done, and a lot more to do! Well done to the girls for settling in so well into 6th Class and taking on the responsible role.
In Maths this week, the girls were busy learning about lines and angles. They made lots of connections to the Natural and Built environment and could see that lines and angles are all around us. Their estimation skills have greatly improved and next week they will be focusing more on measuring with standard protractors. Here are some photos – Can you spot the lines and angles?
Over the last two weeks, the girls have created some beautiful Art. Firstly, they sketched a vase of flowers on greaseproof paper. Following this, they coloured it with Oil Pastels. And finally, they used white spirits to merge the colours and create a stained class effect. Here are some examples on display.
We’re back!!
Welcome back to 6th Class blog. A new week, a new year. One week down and already 6th Class have been extremely busy. The first week is always the toughest as it takes time to get used to early mornings, new rules, getting organised and getting back into homework! But the girls are adjusting great and taking the role of 6th Class very seriously indeed.
The girls got to know each other again with a nice SPHE activity, “All About Me”. We also composed Acrostic Poems, “Back To School”. These will be displayed in our Start of Year scrapbook.
We also enjoyed a Science lesson on Sound. Without realising it, the girls discovered that their hearing, as children, is a lot better than an adult. I played a video to demonstrate pitch, but I thought it wasn’t working as I couldn’t hear it. However, it became obvious that the class could hear it as they covered their ears! Children and adults have different hearing ranges. Did you know that Volume is measured in Decibels (dB) and the pitch is recorded in Hertz (Hz).

The Sixth Class girls had the privilege of being the first to try out the school’s new tablets. The girls worked in pairs to do their World War 2 project and some even worked on their Irish project
This week in Sixth Class!!
This week Sixth Class have started their new class novel “Carries War” by Nina Bawden. It is a book set in World War Two and follows a girl and her brother who were evacuated from London during the Blitz to the countryside in South Wales. The girls are working very well in small groups to discuss each chapter and are eager to find out what happens next.
In order to understand the background to “Carrie’s War” , we have being learning all about the Blitz, the Great Evacuation and the Holocaust through Letters by Evacuees, Witness’ account and reading extracts from “The Diary of Anne Frank”. Ebony was inspired so much that she got her own copy of “The Diary of Anne Frank” so we hope to hear feedback from her when she gets through it.

In PE, we are inspired by all the Active Week activities from last week where we put a great effort into walking to Prague with the rest of the school, played dodgeball, learned a Polynesian Slap dance with Rhythm and Shakes, practiced our Irish dancing, hip hop and Salsa with Dawn and Denise, had hurling coaching in the Ferrybank GAA pitch and started learning basketball skills in PE. This week we are continuing on with basketball, we were practicing different types of passes and improving our shots in the basket. We now like to finish the PE lesson with a few loops of the Active school Walkway!!

Thumbprint Presentation
Yesterday, Thursday 19th April, we were visited by Mary and Catherine from SMA who gave us a talk on climate change. It was a very colourful and interesting experience. The children learned how the earth is being damaged at a fast rate, how we are producing way too much waster and using up the earth’s natural resources as if there is an infinite supply. We learned how 1 person in Ireland could produce the same waste as 100 people in Africa but are paying the highest price for what we are doing to the earth.The idea behind the thumbprint presentation was for the girls to commit to their best in the campaign against climate change. They added their thumbprint to give the “thumbs up for climate justice” and to commit to the following promise.

strength to put it into action in my life
and in the example that I give to others!”
Monday April 16th
Despite their Big Day on Saturday, the girls turned up to school bright and early Monday morning to have a nice day together.It was a nice day to be together and finish the Confirmation celebrations and wind down after a lot of hard work.
First, the girls made friendship bracelet, teaching Mrs Foley a thing or two. Later in the morning, we had a visit from the 6th class boys and Mr. Nagle who kindly collected all our artwork and posters from the church. Both 6th classes gathered in the hall and Miss O Reilly and Tracey provided hot chocolate for them. It was great to see both girls and boys enjoying each other’s company after completing the Confirmation journey together. They were having so much fun that the boys stayed for small break and played in the our yard.
After 11 o clock, it was spa time!! a face mask made from bananas and honey was whisked up. The girls had spa day partners who applied the face mask for them.
After Lunch, came the slumber party with sweets, treats and movies galore!
