World Book Day!!

World Book Day was due to be on Thursday March 1st, however, the “Beast from the East” got in our way. We decided to celebrate it today. Girls dressed up as a character from a book. The girls in 6th Class presented their favourite book to the class, all very interesting and really enticing us to read all featured books. The girls are now turning their hand at re-illustrating the cover of their favourite book. Tomorrow, each girl will present their own piece of work to the class. For the past few weeks, they have being working at home on writing and illustrating their own bedtime storybook. We cannot wait to see the results. Stay tuned!!

Sixth Class Retreat Day

On Tuesday 6th March, the girl from 6th class attended their Retreat Day in the Parish Hall. It is an important part for preparation for Confirmation but also, its a chance for the girls to be together to have a meditative and enjoyable day as group in their final year of primary school. The Retreat was facilitated by the Net Ministries who are a young group and they really put together a wonderful schedule for the girls for the day. 6th class would like to thank Sean, Courtney, Rakina, Marie and Patrick who were the Net Ministries team. Thank you to Miss O Reilly who brought up some lovely soup to  the girls, it was a real treat!! Thank you to the Sacred Heart of Mary Sisters for the use of their beautiful oratory for our Mass as part of our retreat. Thank you very much to  Father Dempsey for organizing this event for us and celebrating Mass with us.

This was really a day for the Sixth Class girls and when asked to reflect on  their day, here are examples of what they wrote.

“On March 6th 2018, we had a retreat day in the Parish Hall. We were in small groups.Lorraine, Ruth, Hayley and Mihaela were in mine. Our leader was Marie. We played fun games that had symbolic meaning, for example, the game square mazes showed us that if you make a mistake in life you can get a second chance. We also dramatized the sacraments, ours was Communion with the theme of Disney Princesses. The leaders dramatized a Confession where the person confessing lied, while doing her penance she felt bad. We meditated and the leaders prayed with us . After that we went the Sacred Heart of Mary sisters and Father Dempsey said Mass.

” Our Retreat Day was held in the Parish Hall on the 6th of March 2018. The retreat was run by the Waterford Net team from Net Ministries. The Net members were Sean, Courtney, Marie, Patrick and Rakina. When we got there we played a group game, then split into our small groups. I was in Sean’s small group. We were talking about our Confirmation. We played more games. We made up dramas about Sacraments. In my small group, we dramatized Confession with a Star Wars theme. We watched Rakina and Patrick doing a drama about taking action. Patrick played his guitar and we watched another drama about lying in Confession. Next we did a meditation and prayed. We went to mass in the Sacred Heart of Mary’s Sisters chapel. Fr. Dempsey led the Mass. Our day was lovely and I learned a lot about our upcoming Confirmation!”

World Book Day

I hope all the girls in 6th Class are keeping safe and warm today.Make sure that when the big snowstorm hits that everyone is inside and stays there until it is safe.

Today is World Book Day and I know you were all looking forward to dressing up as your favourite character today. Why not still do so and take a picture?

www.worldbookday.com has a videos to watch and if you look for the imagination channel it has interviews with lots of authors with advice for all you budding writers.

Use the time today to create a bookmark for your favourite book. You could use ribbon and beads to create a lovely tassel for it.

Watching the blizzard out of a window of your lovely warm house could inspire a great paragraph for a story.See what you can come up with.

When everyone is stuck indoors they need entertainment. Why not make a treasure hunt? Write some four lined, rhyming clues for areas around the house for your family to work out and have a treat at the end!!

Be helpful today, help with the preparations for this afternoon and be kind to each other.

Stay Safe Girls!!

Snow Day!

Good Counsel GNS is closed for the snow today. I know the Sixth Class girls love to be busy and when they are all finished enjoying the snow outside, here are suggestions for some activities to continue the fun inside.

  • Do a sketch or animation for the “Beast from the East” . What do you imagine this beast to look like? How is it taking over Ireland?!!!

  • Keep a log/diary on this weather event. On the news, “Beast from the East” is being compared to a weather event that occurred in 1982. How would you account your experience of this event for someone in 36 years time?!Listen to news reports to get your information.

  • Write a poem about the snow. For example, what can you do in the snow? The movement of the snow etc etc

  • Play Games!! and I don’t mean computer games. Play board games like scrabble or pictionary. Play charades, cards, make snowballs from socks and have a snowball fight. The possibilities are endless.Use your imagination!

  • Bake! A nice activity to do together at home today. Remember, we are doing Weight in Maths this week, so you are to take charge of the weighing scales and measure out those ingredients.

  • Reminder! Your project to write and illustrate a children’s bedtime story is due on the 9th of March, why not take this time to work on it and read it to your family!

  • Read – catch up on reading time. Snuggle up with a book and relax.

The main thing is to Stay Safe girls.

See you soon girls,

Mrs Foley

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sixth Class have had a very busy day today. We attended 10  o clock Mass today to mark Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.

When we got back to the classroom, we had our Valentine’s Verse competition.  The girls were asked to finish “Roses are Red, Violets are blue……” and they had to make it as “sickly sweet” as possible. Our winner was Rosa, who won it by class vote, not just on the content but how she presented it.Here is the winning verse:

Roses are Red

Violets are blue,

When I count to two,

I will kiss you.

Rebecca also won a prize for her lovely, heartfelt poem.

Daffodils grow very Spring

Roses bloom just like my love for you

It gets bigger and bigger each year

and in Spring we watch the flowers bloom.

I really hope it stays this way

Because I love no-one more than you.

Finishing touches were also put on some of our Valentine’s card. Some lucky people received theirs early this morning while for some, there is a surprise ahead!!

In the afternoon, the girls presented the project they had been working on with the title”The Best Invention Ever”. The girls did great work on their posters but also a great job at presenting them to the class. They all spoke very well and gave lots of extra information.

Dancing with the Stars – Sixth Class Style.

Since the beginning of January, the Sixth Class girls have been doing the Dance Strand in PE which the girls really got into the swing of!! We started with the Irish Country Jive, which the girls quickly got into. They were surprised of how much of a workout it was!!

We moved on then to the Charleston Dance and after a few weeks training, we just had to do a dance video with Libby Jo as camerawoman. The girls enjoyed watching themselves on the big screen in our classroom.

Between PE class and Dancing on a Tuesday with Dawn and Denise, the girls have learned Irish Dancing, Line Dancing, Hip Hop, Salsa, the Jive, the Charleston and will be moving on next week to the Cha Cha. What dancing stars we have!!
