Senior Infants Blog

Welcome back!

After an unplanned break from school it was great to see the girls back in school safe and well and hear all the news about the fun they had in the snow and the activities they had done. A big thank you to Ms. O’Reilly and her team for all their hard work on Sunday and for getting the school back open on Monday.

Next week we will celebrate friendship week in our school and senior infants are trying really hard to get to know and play with all the girls in their class. We are learning all about the importance of friendship, appreciating friends and how we can help and care for each other in school. Keep up to date about friendship week on the Latest News tab.

Senior Infants made a fantastic effort to dress up for World Book Day today. Mrs Ryan and Ms Moore were blown away with all the wonderful, creative costumes on show today. Well done to all the Mams and Dads for the fantastic effort.

Check out some of our pictures from World Book Day!

Happy Friday!

Hello girls,

I hope everyone in Senior Infants is staying safe and enjoying all the snow. Mrs Ryan is well and truly snow bound!

So just in case cabin fever is setting in I’ve got plenty of ideas to keep everyone entertained as Storm Emma rages on.

  1. Break out the board games: With many parents at home and not rushing around this is where old fashioned board games come into their own. Or even better why not make your own board game, it’s a great way to build on turn-taking skills, creativity, negotiation and logic.
  2. Get Crafty: Why not gather up recycled materials, old magazines and newspapers and go wild with a scissors and some glue. and let your imagination run wild!
  3. Ready, set, bake: Children love to bake and cook and it helps children develop their reading skills, follow instructions and develop hand-eye coordination. And the best thing of all you get to eat some yummy treats at the end.
  4. Make a mess: Homemade Play-Doh made with flour, salt, oil and water with food colouring is better than shop bought variety and very easy to make. Water play and messy play can also be great fun but make sure you get permission first!
  5. Camp indoors: Set up a small tent in the living room or bedroom. Put in some cushions, teddy bears, sleeping bags and books and camp indoors while the wind and snow is howling outside.

So girls I hope you enjoy some of the above activities and I will hopefully see everyone back safely in school on Monday.

World Book Day is here!

Good Morning Senior Infants. Hope you are all staying indoors today and keeping safe and warm.

It’s World Book Day on this snowy, cold first day of March. Even though we are not at school you can still get into the spirit of World Book Day at home. Reading has numerous  benefits and evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day develop a broader vocabulary, have increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. It also suggests that reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.

So here’s a few ideas for World Book Day:

  1. Create a special place for you to read today maybe in front of the fire with lots of cushions and snuggly blankets, you could even make a reading den!
  2. Re-tell your favourite and well known stories through play. Maybe set up a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, go on a Bear Hunt, or bake a Gingerbread Man.
  3. Dress up and become your favourite book character. Maybe you could be the Big Bad Wolf or the elf for the shoemaker.
  4. Make your own fiction book today all about your adventures in the snow.

Whatever you decide to do have a fun filled day and I can’t wait to hear all about your day on Monday.

Enjoy and stay safe!

Good Morning

Good Morning Senior Infants. I hope everybody is keeping warm and safe.

As the school is closed today I have listed some activities for senior infants to enjoy today.

  • Linking with our Aistear theme ‘The Library’ make a simple Non-Fiction book called ‘The Snowman’.
  • Draw a picture of the snow and using old newspaper or magazines make a collage or simply colour the picture. You can be as creative as you want.
  • Make the Active school logo poster for our school. Come up with a catchy slogan for example ‘Get fit and do our bit’. We can hand in our entries when we come back to school.
  • Write as many ‘at’ words as you can. Try and make a long list like we did yesterday.
  • Curl up on the couch and read your favourite book. Tomorrow I will give lots of ideas for World Book Day.

Enjoy all these activities and do as many as you can. Mrs Ryan will update more creative activities tomorrow if we are not back in school. Enjoy the snow!!

Our news

We hope everyone enjoyed the Mid-Term break. It was great to come back to school on Monday and meet all our friends and teachers.

We are getting ready to start our new theme in Aistear ‘The Library’. We made a visit to the library on Thursday and got lots of great ideas. Karyn the librarian showed us around the library and we were amazed at all the great facilities available to our community. Karyn will visit our classroom on Wednesday to help us with Aistear. We are very excited!

We hope that everyone wraps up warm next week as ‘The Beast from the East’ approaches. So don’t forget to bring your coat, scarf, hat and gloves. Beidh sé fuar, fuar, fuar!!

Farewell Miss Sexton!

We will be very sad to say goodbye to Miss Sexton on Wednesday. We really enjoyed all the teaching and learning Miss Sexton has done with us over the past four weeks. Slán agus go raibh maith agat.

On Tuesday we made pancakes and we tried a variety of delicious toppings on our pancakes. Our favourite toppings were blueberries, raspberries, lemon and sugar Yum, Yum.

On Wednesday we were filled with love on Valentine’s Day and as it’was also Ash Wednesday we received ashes and we discussed and drew pictures of our lenten promises.

We are all looking forward to our Mid-Term break and thanks to all the parents who came to the Parent/Teacher meetings last week. The meetings helps us build and maintain relationships with parents and work together to promote teaching and learning for all the pupils in our school.

Spring has Sprung!

We had an action packed week at school with lots of lovely activities going on. In our numeracy station in Aistear this week we played the Lotto. We were so excited picking out our own numbers and waiting for the lotto draw. The girls were very lucky and won lots of money. It was so much fun!

We celebrated Grandparent’s Day on Wednesday and we shared lovely stories about our grandparents. On Thursday we learned all about St Brigid and made St Brigid’s cloak. To celebrate the start of Spring we also planted watercress seeds so we are now waiting patiently for them to grow.

Yes Spring has sprung in Senior Infants!
