Second Class Blog
Second Class news.
This week was Catholic Schools Week and we went to the church on Monday for Mass, and on Friday for a prayer service.
We learned a special song to St. Brigid and we made St. Bridgid’s Day crosses out of pipecleaners.
A special birthday was celebrated in the classroom on February 1st….a hard date to forget! (an even harder birthday to forget!!)
We celebrated with some chocolate biscuit cake.
We made some penguins and polar bears, to finish off our tableau on Tom Crean and we made some lambs to remind us that Spring is finally here.
I am looking forward to meeting parents/guardians next week.
Second Class news
We finished off a few projects this week. We put Tom Crean’s story together, and we have some lovely pictures up on the wall documenting his three exciting expeditions to the Antartic. He was an amazing man.
We told a story about Dusty the cat, and we can see how much our handwriting is improving.
We know some facts about koalas: they are not bears, they sleep for almost 18 hours a day, they eat eucalyptus leaves and they are only found in Australia. They are marsupials.
It was a significant week for Green Schools. Ella Ryan from Waterford City Council came to talk to the Committee, and she also visited 5th Class. She was very impressed with all the work documented in the two folders and 5th Class did themselves proud with their fund of knowledge on the atmosphere, greenhouse gasses, fossil fuels, renewable sources of energy and carbon dioxide. Second Class are also au fait with these terms and we are also focusing on how to avoid food waste.
We heard the story of The Minotour, from the island of Crete in Greece.
We learned a funny song called The Green Machine , and we made a model of what we thought this machine looked like. We all came up with different ideas.
We are continuing to learn prayesr for First Penance and we prepared 4 Prayers of the Faithful for Mass on Monday for Catholic Schools Week.
A busy week!
We had a busy week this week!
We did two science experiments: Alka Seltzer Pop and Rocket Balloon Race. This is for our Green Schools folder ,that will be presented to Ella Ryan for our assessment next Thursday.
We have documented 17 things that we have done in relation to the Global Citizenship and Energy theme. We are all very proud of our achievement.
We are also learning more about Tom Crean, and his adventures in the Antartic. We are now learning about his third journey there.
We keep an eye on the wrappers every week. This week , we had 4 wrappers , which is fewer than usual.
We are practicing our prayers and songs for Confession and Communion.
We are making slow and steady progress with Amhrán na bhFiann
January news.
Bhiomar go leir ar fheabhas ag an Gaeilge tar eis na laethanta saoire! Ainm (name), aois (age), (family). This will be useful when we are doing our oral Irish for Leaving Cert!
We are also going to attempt to learn Amhran na bhFiann. We hope to have mastered it by Easter.
We had a practice for our Do this in Memory Mass this morning to prepare for tomorrow night.
We are learning all about the explorer Tom Crean for Coisceim. He was an amazing man who achieved so much in his lifetime.
We are focusing on our handwriting these days. We have practiced the formation of all the letters and we are going to try to keep all our letters the same size, except for the capital letters of course
We also paid a long overdue visit to the library on Thursday.
Alianna told us a little bit about Spike Island and Iraq.
Sarah-Lynn brought in a piece of the Berlin wall and we listened to a short explanation about why the wall was built.
We filled in a sheet about our hopes and resolutions for 2018
Happy Christmas!
The last post before the holidays!
It has been a busy week. We had a lot of girls out on Monday. It was disappointing to miss the last day of swimming. All the girls enjoyed the 6 weeks in Kingfisher and hopefully will keep the swimming up. It’s all practice!
Fifth , fourth and second classes came together for choir and we sang some lovely Christmas songs. We hope to sing together again next week and hopefully second class will get to visit the Sisters in Madonna House to sing some Christmas songs for the Sisters.
The knitters completed their first item! ( With a little help from Ms Finucane!). They made Christmas wreaths and/or a cat. Hopefully there will be a lot of knitting done during the holidays and we will be ready to start again on Thursdays
We wish you all a Green Christmas! The children will have great tips on how to stay ‘ green’ during the holidays. Small changes can make all the difference.
Wishing you all a happy ,peaceful and restful Christmas.
December news
We are busy learning songs for Hey Ewe. We have three songs to learn.
We have started our Christmas art. We are making clay handprints that we will paint as Santa Claus and put on the Christmas tree. The clay was hard to work with in the beginning.
In Science, we checked out the law of gravity as discovered by Isacc Newton. We saw that when you drop things of different weight from the same height, they will land on the ground at the same time. This information will be recorded in the Green Schools folder.
We are making progress with knitting, but the girls need a lot of help. Hopefully , there will be time to knit during the Christmas holidays. We would like to have a knitted Christmas wreath for the tree before the holidays
