Second Class Blog

Second Class news.

Once again, Friday comes around very quickly.

With only days left to our Holy Communion, we have been busy going to the church to practice for our special day.

On Monday of last week, we were invited to Little Sisters of the Poor to sing at their special mass, to celebrate 150 years in Ferrybank. Everyone was impressed with our singing, and our responses to the Mass. The sisters very kindly provided treats for us afterwards. We hope to go back in June to sing some songs for them with 5th class.

We started our planting as part of Incredibel Edibles. We planted strawberries and potatoes outdoors and we planted spinach seeds indoors, and many of the seeds are sprouting. These will have to be replanted in to a bigger container, then ‘hardened off’ before being put in the ground outside.

We will grow basil, peas and tomatoes later on , when the weather improves.

We also got tips on how to grow carrots and lettuce.

We had two nominees for Good Counsel Good citizen: Monika and Summer. Well deserved nominees.

We are busy doing our Communion art for the Church and the corridor. It will look very nice indeed.

For our reading, we tried to memorise as many facts as we could about bears, and we are going to read as many books as we can from the Mr. Men series, before deciding which is our favourite character. We also visited the library on Thursday.

I hope everybody enjoys the Bank Holiday weekend.

Second Class news.

How could it be Friday already? Probably because we had no school on Wednesday….the students that is! The teachers were busy in the Teachers’ Centre

The week passed very quickly indeed.

We went to Mass on Thursday morning because we need to practice saying our prayers during Mass. We hope to go every Friday leading up to our Communion…..only 3 Fridays left!

On Wednesday night, those children that were free from Second and Fifth classes took part in a choir charity event for the Niall Mellon Foundation in the Theatre Royal. It was a fantastic experience for us all. We sang The Ferrybank Piper and Smile.

On Friday, we had an ideal day for planting our seeds with the long awaited sunshile. We are part of The Incredible Edible programme and we were given spinach, carrot, turnip and basil seeds to sow. Some of those seeds will be put directly into the ground, and some will be started off in the classroom on a sunny windowsill. We are waiting for the ground to dry out a little before we start planting. We also planted some strawberry runners and we hope to put in potatoes on Monday.

Always something to look forward to……on Monday we are privilaged to be invited to sing at a special Mass in the Little Sisters and we are all excited about Active Schools Week…..not really because we  will have 10 minutes extra playtime at 11am!

Second Class news.

Our first week back in school seemed to go very quickly.

We welcomed a new girl into our class. Her name is Mais.

We were all glad to be back for our final term, with so much to look forward to: Communion in 5 weeks, a school tour sometime in June (most likely), our Green Schools Day of Action and possibly a few trips to town and a visit to the park.

We got good news on Wednesday: we were awarded our seventh Green Flag. We are all very proud and happy with the news. The Awards Ceremony takes place in Kilkenny on Tuesday, May 22nd.

We saw “dancing raisins”. We put some raisins in a cup with 7up and more in a cup with water. We saw what happened to the raisins when they interacted with the carbon dioxide in the 7up

We went to the library for our fortnightly visit on Thursday, and we went to Mass on Friday morning.

We did lovely fold over painting this morning and will see what faces/shapes we see in the painting on Monday.

We read about where our Mission Week money went in a letter from Harry and Ursula Knox from Opportunity Knox. It makes us appreciate it what we have!

A letter is going home about participating in a choral event in the Theatre Royal on Wednesday next.

It will be very exciting to be part of this performance for such a worthy cause.

A happy Easter to everyone!

The day of the holidays came around very quickly, and we had a lot to do this week.

We did our dramai Gaeilge on Wednesday for 3rd and 4th classes, and by popular demand(!) for the rest of the school on Thursday. Though we say so ourselves….bhiomar ar fheabhas!

We finished off our Easter cards and we entered a local colouring competition so fingers crossed that we will have a winner.

We are proud of Nia who won an award for Active Schools, and we had two winners at the Easter raffle…..Annie and Monika. We also had a nomination and a winner for the Good Citizens award, and that was Amelia. Well done for getting this award.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe Easter.

We have been busy practising all week for our dramai Gaeilge, which we are hoping to perform next Wednesday for the school.

We made lovely badges and a leprechaun for St. Patrick’s Day. We have only three and a half days left to prepare something for Easter!

We learned some more facts about the Great Wall of China.

We made lovely patchwork elephants for World Book Day, as Ms Finucane had very happy memories of that book when her children were small……fado, fado!

While we were at it, we learned some interesting things about elephants: they don’t eat meat, the female raises the offspBring with the help of some ‘Aunties’, they can do amazing things with their trunks and they can live for up to 70 years.

We went to Mass on Friday morning, and we hope to go once a month from now on. The children were as good as gold in the church: they listened very carefully, and joined in with all the responses that they know so far.

Finally, the week ended well with our annual parade , in which the children could wear their national colours. Many songs ‘as Gaeilge’ were sung, and we are very proud that we now know our National Anthem as Gaeilge. That’s a big achievement for Second Class.

Beannachtai na Feile Padraig daoibh go leir.

Second Class news

We were glad to be back to normal last week after the snow closure and we had almost full attendance on Monday.

This week we were busy practising our Dramai Gaeilge for Seachtain na Gaeilge. We hope to perform 4 plays before Easter for the rest of the school

We are learning about China : there are some awesome facts to be remembered. The population of China is over 1 billion and 1 in every 5 people on the planet is Chinese.

This week we will be looking at the quotations of Confusius and realising that they are as relevant today as they were in 550 B.C!

World Book Day was very entertaining. We had fantastic costumes. Red Riding Hood was a popular theme, but we had Wally, an interesting cowboy, Miss Honey from Matilda to name but a few.

Meanwhile we are busy learning our prayers for Communion and our lovely Zacchaeus pictures are up on the wall outside our classroom.

Cold Weather Work!

I hope everyone is safe and warm at home and not missing school too much!
Here are some suggestions to keep you busy during this cold spell.

Continue on with Mental Maths: Wednesday, Thursday and the Friday Test.

English in Practice: do the next two exercises

Practise a paragraph of handwriting: choose a passage from your library book and copy a paragraph (about ten sentences) in your very best handwriting. I will have a prize for the best effort.

Don’t forget the Active School slogan…..you now have plenty of time to think of one, write it on an A4 page, and decorate around it.

Get the family involved in playing cards. Remember all the ones we have learned: Begger my Neighbour, 7s, Switch, highest /lowest score wins (when you turn up two cards) Evil Ace. Have fun!

And lastly , don’t forget your knitting. It would be great if everyone could be ready to start a chick next week, so you will have to finish anything that is on the needles at present.

Remember to go over all the prayers that we have already learned for First Communion

I hope these suggestions will be helpful.
