The School Bell

Nuacht an Mhárta

Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and friends of our school,

I hope this message finds you all well and that you are all looking forward to St. Patrick’s Day. We have been very busy since our last School Bell update in February. The staff here and all of the girls continue to work very hard and continue to enjoy the different initiatives and celebrations.

Last week we celebrated World Book Day where many of the teachers and girls put in a big effort in dressing up as a character from their favourite book! Well done to everyone! A special word also to the girls in Mrs. Power’s 2nd class who made their First Penance last Tuesday. We look forward to their special day, First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 6th

On Monday, I attended the launch of the North Quays Development which was attended by the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar among others. Having seen and heard of the huge plans that will become reality in time, it is a very exciting time to live in Ferrybank. Not only will the landscape of Ferrybank change for the better which will include a new bridge to link Ferrybank to the city centre, we will, over the next few years, see changes to our school and the roads surrounding it! Watch this space!

Finally, a useful resource for parents in Waterford City and County has been launched online. It is called Parent Hub and can be accessed here. Parent hub provides information regarding services available to parents in Waterford and details of events which may be of interest to you. Take the time to have a look – you might find something that interests you!

Wishing you all a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Happy National Colours Day for next week!!

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Nagle

Principal

Intercultural Week 2023

Along with Seachtain na Gaeilge, we will be celebrating our traditional Intercultural Week next week. We look forward to hearing a selection of different languages that our pupils  speak and we will learn some of the greetings in the vast array of languages our pupils speak. There will be songs and music in the different languages and some of our pupils will entertain us with songs broadcast over the intercom. A big thank you, in advance, to the pupils in the Senior Classes who will read stories to the Junior Classes using our lovely dual language books during the week. We will have our National Colours Day on Thursday 16th of March, where all pupils and teachers are encouraged to dress in the colours of their country. Looking forward to seeing lots of colour in our school on Thursday 16th of March.

Peace Proms

Last Sunday evening, March 5th, the Fifth and Sixth Class girls sang their hearts out and danced the night away at the Peace Proms Concert, in the SETU Arena. What an opportunity they experienced, singing with a full orchestra, enjoying entertainment from Irish Dancers from around the country, listening to a fantastic professional singer and enjoying listening to music from traditional Irish instruments. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

You can view the Peace Proms here

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Welcome to Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish Week)! A fun filled busy ten days of Irish activities throughout the school, for the girls to enjoy.

This week the girls have been listening to and using the Seanfhocal an Lae (Irish saying of the day) and the Frása an Lae (Irish phrase of the day). The Nuacht an Lae (News of the Day) has been read to the girls daily by the Sixth Class girls, who also taught them a couple of Irish Dances. Everyone has been enjoying practising them in the yard at lunch time!

Next week, the Irish fun doesn’t stop! The Infants will be read Irish stories, both read and written by Fifth and Sixth Class and the Senior Classes will get involved in a Tráth na gCeist in the school hall. The Senior Infants will be leading a Special St. Patrick’s Day Assembly, at which the Sixth Class will be singing the Amhrán na bhFiann. We also have some other little surprises planned to wrap up the week! Bainigí Taitheamh as an Spraoi gach duine!

February News

Dear Parents, Guardians, Pupils and friends of our school,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter and my first newsletter as the new principal of Our Lady of Good Counsel. Firstly, I am delighted to be back in Ferrybank having spent almost ten happy years in Ferrybank BNS. Since I took up my new position over two weeks ago, I have been hugely impressed by the excellent work that takes place on a daily basis throughout the school. I am very thankful for the warm welcome I have received from both the staff and the children and look forward to working with the school community going forward.

I am very grateful to lead such a wonderful school and staff and I must pay tribute to Ms. O’ Reilly for her hard work and dedication to both her job and the school over many years. I would also like to wish her the very best and I hope that she enjoys many healthy and happy years in retirement.

My aim as principal, in working with the Board of Management, is to continue to provide the safest possible school environment for all staff and children while ensuring that the highest quality teaching and learning occurs daily in our school. I look forward to working with the school community in ensuring this while maintaining and building on all of the great work done by Ms. O’Reilly.

Although I have had the pleasure to meet many of you recently at the parent-teacher meetings, I look forward to meeting you all in time.

Your sincerely,

Mr. Nagle

Opening Times

Please do your very best to ensure that your daughter arrives at school on time. The gates open at 9.10am and the school day starts at this time. The gates will remain open until 9.20am. Please try to have your daughter at the school for 9.10am. Many thanks.

Mid-term Break

The school will close tomorrow Thursday and Friday, February 16th and 17th  for Mid-term break. The school will reopen on Monday, February 20th @ 9.10am.

Parent Teacher Meetings

Many thanks to all who attended their child’s parent-teacher meeting recently. If you have not attended your child’s parent teacher meeting, please make an appointment with the class teacher to do so. Parent teacher meetings are important in maintaining a strong link between school and home and it is vital that you take the time out to attend.

International Mother Language Day 2023

On Tuesday 21 st of February 2023 we will celebrate International Mother Language Day.
This year’s theme is ‘Multilingual Education – a necessity to transform education’. Some of
our incredible 6 th and 3 rd Class girls are going to share their language skills in reading books
in their first languages to the younger classes throughout the day. We will also look forward
to hearing a selection of greetings in different languages throughout the week. We are proud
of the many languages spoken in our school community and how the girls use their language
skills to help their learning. Our Dual-Language storybooks will be displayed for the girls to
browse and see their languages and the English language in print and in story. Remember,
multilingualism is a gift that lasts a lifetime.

St. Brigid’s Special Assembly

5th class did a wonderful job presenting their special assembly on Friday, to celebrate
St. Brigid’s day. To begin, we sang ‘a song to Brigid’ followed by playing the tune on our
recorders. Together as a class, we told the stories and traditions surrounding St.
Brigid.
St. Brigid was born in AD 450 in Faughart, near Dundalk in Co. Louth. Her father,
Dubhthach, was a pagan chieftain of Leinster and her mother, Broicsech, was a
Christian. Brigid’s father named her after one of the most powerful goddesses of the
pagan religion – the goddess of fire, whose manifestations were song, craftsmanship,
and poetry, which the Irish considered the flame of knowledge.
She lived during the time of St. Patrick and was inspired by his preachings and she
became a Christian. When Brigid turned eighteen, she stopped working for her father.
Brigid’s father wanted her to find a husband but Brigid had decided that she would
spend her life working for God by looking after poor, sick and elderly people.
Brigid founded many convents all over Ireland; the most famous one was in Co. Kildare.
It is said that this convent was built beside an oak tree where the town of Kildare now
stands. Around 470 she also founded a double monastery, for nuns and monks, in
Kildare. The Abbey of Kildare became one of the most prestigious monasteries in
Ireland, and was famous throughout Christian Europe.
St. Brigid’s Cross: Making a St. Brigid’s cross is one of the traditional rituals in Ireland
to celebrate the beginning of early spring, 1st February. The crosses are made of
rushes that are pulled rather than cut. They are hung by the door and in the rafters to
protect the house from fire and evil.
We created our very own unique St. Brigid’s crosses from coloured card, to hang on our
doors at home.

World Book Day

World Book Day is on 2nd March 2023, children of all ages will come together to share the joy of reading for pleasure.

World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

We will be celebrating World Book Day here at Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS in many ways, library visits, story time, creative writing challenges and of course dressing up!

Maybe you would like to start thinking about what character you would like to dress up as for World Book Day.  It could be a character from one of the books you have read or a story you have heard.  By using your imagination and all your creativity we know that you will all be amazing as always.

Try to use things that you already have at home to make your costume or maybe recycle something you have used before. We look forward to seeing all the wonderful costumes and reading lots of books!

January News

Dear Mams, Dads, Staff, Pupils and friends of Our School,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. Next week marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week 2023. The theme this year is ‘Walking Together in Faith and Love’. Each of us are on a journey in life. Every Catholic school seeks to help their pupils along their journey, nurturing their gifts and talents. This Catholic Schools Week, we celebrate the unique contribution our schools make to the lives of our pupils, community and Church. To help celebrate it, our pupils will attend mass in the local parish church.  As we journey together, may we always be inspired by the Holy Spirit. May we talk together in faith and love.

I hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

God Bless

Miss M. Kelly

Parent Teacher Meetings

We are looking forward to meeting all of you, Mams and Dads, at our parent teacher meetings beginning the week of the 30th of January. You will receive an invitation to meet with your daughter’s teacher on Monday 23rd – if you have not received your invitation, please contact the school office immediately.  To be fair to other parents, and to staff, please let the teachers know in advance if for some reason you cannot attend. While we try to accommodate everyone, we would like, as far as possible to keep the meetings to the times on your invitation.

Winter Season

With Winter weather here, please ensure your daughter has a nutritious warm breakfast  in the morning and plenty of warm clothing to wear.

Attendance & Punctuality

The school gates open at 9.10am in the morning. School lessons, group sessions and individual support programmes begin promptly at the start of the school day.

If your child is absent, please contact the school on the first day of absence by email to the class teacher or by calling the school office on 051 – 832984 otherwise the absence will be entered as “no explanation received for the absence”.

Lateness impacts negatively on your child’s  education and children find it upsetting and embarrassing, as they get older, to arrive late when lessons have already begun.

Wellbeing Survey

The Department of Education and Skills launched the revised Wellbeing Policy Statement and Framework for Practice in October 2019. To implement this policy, every school is required to initiate a wellbeing promotion and development cycle by 2025. It is a six-step process. As a school staff, we have identified Relationships and Partnerships as an area we would like to focus on. The next step is to gather information and this is where we need your help. We need some data and information which will help us see where we can make improvements.   We have parent-teacher meetings at the end of the month so we will leave the surveys outside each classroom. You can fill in the survey as you wait and pop it into the box outside each classroom. You are not required to put down your name.

Thank you for your continued support.

Chinese New Year

Safer internet Day

Safer internet Day takes place on Tuesday 7th of February.  On this day we will be joining people in more than 150 countries around the world in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2023.  It is an EU wide initiative to promote a safer internet for all users, especially young people.

The website www.webwise.ie/saferinternetday has lots of information for parents, activities and videos.  We would also like to highlight the child friendly search engines that we use in our school.

Healthy Eating

A reminder that it is important that your daughter brings a healthy lunch to school. Please think of the type and the amount of food in the lunchbox. The amount of sugar consumed at lunch will effect a child’s ability to concentrate  and learn in the afternoons. Please make sure absolutely no item containing nuts or traces of nuts is brought into school due to possible allergic reactions. Thank you for your support.

In The Event….

In the event of a school closure due to poor weather conditions, parents will be contacted via textaparent messaging service. Welcome Back

Dear Mams, Dads, Staff, Pupils and Friends of Our School,

Happy New Year! I do hope that you had a relaxing and peaceful Christmas holiday with your families. Today we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany marking the day the Three Wise Men visited baby Jesus, bearing gifts for the newborn King. We pray for the grace to recognise that which leads to our own encounter with Christ, as the Three Wise Men did when they followed the star*.                  As the new term begins, I hope the year ahead will be a happy and healthy one for you and your family members. I wish you all a lovely weekend.

Nollaig na mBan!

God Bless.

A New Year Prayer

Thank you Lord for giving me,

The brand-New Year ahead.

Help me live the way I should,

As each new day I tread.

Give me gentle wisdom,

That I may help a friend,

Give me the strength and courage,

So a shoulder I may lend.

The year ahead is empty,

Help me fill it with good things,

Each new day is filled with joy,

And the happiness it brings.

Amen.

Online Safety – Keeping Safe!

The internet and digital technologies are becoming a bigger part of children’s lives and provide them with many benefits and opportunities.  As parents it is important to keep our children safe online and this not only means getting involved and engaging with them about what they are doing but also developing and understanding of how the internet works.

For Christmas, Santa may have brought new phones, tablets, Ipads and consoles. www.webwise.ie have helpful advice for parents to ensure that children have a positive experience online.

Litter Monitors

Our litter monitors will check the top and bottom yard for litter after big lunch every day.

Each class selects children to pick up litter with the litter pickers provided. Some of the committee members are helping the Junior Classes. The monitors will then count how many pieces of litter on each yard. There are two classes on every yard section. Each section will start on twenty points every Monday.

A point is lost for every piece of litter found. The results are recorded read aloud every week at assembly.

Tips to Reduce Wrappers

Put crisps, sweets and popcorn into a container on Treat Days. Fridays are our only Treat Day!

Do not use tin foil, tissue and cling film in your lunch box.

Do not drop uneaten lunch on the yard. Put it back in your lunchbox.

New Litter Pickers

We recently wrote a letter to the Board of Management requesting new litter pickers. They replied to our request stating we could get six litter pickers. We are waiting for their delivery, and we will put them to good use.

Anti- Bullying Week

We also led a special assembly to mark Anti- Bullying Week

Our Trip to Grow HQ

On Thursday 27th of October, the Senior Garden Gladiators visited the Dunmore Road with Miss Kelly and Miss Harney.

It was a dull and damp morning as we set off but that didn’t dampen our spirits. The girls were treated to a tour of the wonderful vegetable gardens by Head Grower, Richard Mee. Richard showed us how to cut lettuce from the garden and he gave us some to bring home. He also showed us how they compost in GIY.  We didn’t like the smell! We took turns in spinning the wheel of the composter. We got to see the wormery. Richard told us some of the names of the tiger worms. After our Guided Tour we visited the Sensory Garden and got to smell and taste some herbs. After all the walking and touring we then went to the Café and had a tasty treat. All the food served in the Café goes full circle at Grow HQ from the ground to the plate and back to the ground again. As we were leaving the rain started again – but as gardeners say “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”. We had a lovely day and we brought back a thank you card to Miss O’ Reilly.

Basketball Blitz News

Last Tuesday, November 8th, Mrs. Burke was invited to bring a team of girls to a Girls Basketball School Blitz, organised by The Mercy Secondary School, Fourth Year girls.

She decided to bring the girls who joined The Wildcats Basketball Team in recent years. To her amazement, she could not get over how much they had improved! Not only did they win three out of four of their matches, but to witness their teamwork, and encouragement and praise to each other, was fantastic. Each girl acknowledged her own basketball strengths, put them into action, creating a superb team of players.

Mrs. Burke was so, so proud of each of the girls. She really enjoyed her day out with them and they also had a great day too. It just goes to show, with a little dedication, determination, practice and patience, you can go a long way.

If you would like to be a Wildcat like these amazing girls, please talk to Mrs. Burke who will give you a free pass to a training session with the Wildcats! Why not go along and see if you like it?

Mission Week News

What a fantastic Mission Week we had! As you will see from our Latest News tab, the girls raised a large sum of money which has now been donated to Opportunity Knox. Opportunity Knox is a local charity that works in Uganda. Every cent will be used to provide education supports to children who would otherwise not be able to afford to go to school.

As well as raising money, here are some of the things that the girls learned during Mission Week. In their own words:

‘We learned that when we work together, we get better’.

‘I learned how to count money’.

‘I learned more about my friends’.

‘We learned to have fun, to share and to be grateful’.

‘I learned that selling things is hard work’.

Girls, during Mission Week, you demonstrated all the qualities of Good Counsel Good Citizens – patience, courage, respect, care, loyalty, trust and fairness. Well done!

Covid-19

Unfortunately, Covid-19 is still with us. Please remember that if your child has tested positive for Covid-19, she needs to remain at home for 7 days. We have a pupil in our school who is very vulnerable due to an organ transplant, so we rely on you to take particular care.

Special Assembly

As we begin the month of November, we remember all our loved ones who have died, and we also pray for those who have no-one to pray for them. Mrs. Ryan’s Third Class has prepared a Special Assembly for today and they will lead us in prayer and song.

At this time, we extend our sincere sympathy to Sr. Mary Gough on the recent death of her twin sister, Sr. Catherine. May Catherine rest in peace with all the Saints and Holy Souls.

Remember those this special time,

Who live with God above.

All Saints and Souls, and all our own,

Who live with God in love.

Congratulations

Everyone at Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS sends congratulations to Mr. Jamie Nagle who has been appointed as the next Principal. We look forward to welcoming him to our school in January.

Congratulations also to Mrs. Clare Burke who has recently been appointed to the In-School Management Team as an Assistant Principal. Good luck in your new role Mrs. Burke.
