We’re Open!
Happy to say that school re-opens tomorrow, Thursday 9th December. A message from the Department of Education is copied below.
The Department is advising that schools throughout the country will open tomorrow as usual.
The Department would like to thank school communities, staff, students and parents, as well as the emergency services for their support during Storm Barra.
Further School Closure
Dear Dads, Mams and Girls,
Please see the statement below just issued by the Department of Education. As a result, the school will remain closed again tomorrow, December 8th.
You might also take a few minutes tomorrow, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and our school’s birthday, to remember everyone who has made a contribution to Our Lady of Good Counsel GNS over the past 62 years.
Stay safe and warm.
Yours sincerely,
C. O’Reilly – Principal
The Department is advising that all schools that are currently or forecast to be in a Red or Orange alert area should remain closed tomorrow, 8th December. This will allow for assessment of the impact of Storm Barra to take place.
This includes counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Mayo and Wexford.
Weather Warning
Dear Mams and Dads,
This is the message received from the Department of Education advising schools not to open tomorrow. Our apologies for any inconvenience and we hope that you and your families remain safe.
Yours sincerely,
C. O’Reilly – Principal
A Red Alert has now been issued by Met Éireann relating to severe wind for counties Clare, Kerry and Cork.
A status orange warning has issued for counties Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Mayo, Wexford, Dublin, Louth, Wicklow, Meath.
Met Éireann has advised that there is a strong possibility that the status of parts of these counties currently in status orange are likely to change and escalate to status red.
Due to the significant nature of Storm Barra, as forecast by Met Éireann and to give sufficient notice to schools and parents/guardians, the Department is advising that all schools covered by the Red Alert and Orange warning from Met Éireann should not open tomorrow, 7 December.

CMO-Letter-to-schools-FINAL_Mask Wearing
Dear Mams and Dads,
Late yesterday evening, the Department of Education sent a letter to schools about mask wearing for 3rd to 6th Class pupils. Lots of points are still unclear, and when we have had further guidance, we will contact you. In the meantime, we will continue with our policy of doing everything we can to keep the girls and the staff safe.
This week, teachers will talk to the girls abut mask-wearing. They will explain how to put on and take off masks safely and we will do everything we can to re-assure anyone who is feeling a bit upset or anxious. This little video may be helpful for you in talking to your children about mask wearing.
There is lots of discussion in the media, with lots of different opinions being aired so I would ask you please, to keep calm and wait for further updates from our school.
Thank you, as always, for your great support and co-operation. Things change every day, and it can be hard to keep up sometimes, but if we continue to work together for the benefit of the girls, I am sure that we can make our way safely through the next few weeks up to the Christmas break.
Yours sincerely,
C. O’Reilly
